Wine Tasting

Last night we had our second annual wine tasting party at the Strathairn's.  Last year we held the first one  just before Christmas.  This year there was too much going on so we decided to postpone it until things had calmed down (like they ever will?).  Everyone brought something to contribute to the dinner and we each brought a bottle of red and white, hidden in paper sacks.  That's a bottle of wine per person.  Yikes!

The appetizers are spread out on the bar: a hot chipped beef spread and an olive and cream cheese dip made by Katie.  Terri's daughter, Jessie and her boyfriend, Collin helped.

Terri and Collin whipped up these grape tomatoes filled with guacamole.  They were scrumptious as were all the appetizers.

All the wine glasses poured and ready for us to taste our first white.

Ken and Tom seriously consider the merits of a white while Collin looks on.

John gives Katie an opinion of a white as Eli listens.

Norma toasts our party hosts who have organized 8 tasting sheets on clipboards with pens for our convenience while judging.  The critique sheets are very comprehensive enabling you to rate appearance, aroma, taste and aftertaste.

We had salads that I made with our 4th white.  The salad is bibb lettuce accented with arugula, radicchio and endive tossed with a light viniagrette.  Terri served toasted bread sticks to accompany the salad.

After the salad course and before dinner, we lined up the whites in their bag disguises as Collin tallied the scores and then he announced the winner.  It was Stella Blanca, a Semillion from North Star winery in Walla Walla, WA.

Terri made the wine bags last year and we saved them because they are so cute.

The winning red and the best of show overall was a Petite Syrah from Rancho Bernardo Winery here in San Diego County.  It was very luscious and we all decided to go there one night for dinner.  I should have gotten a picture of our dessert, a chocolate pizza.  It had a thin brownie crust, a flavored whipped cream topping and it was spread with mandarin oranges and strawberries and drizzled with chocolate sauce.  Very yummy!
A big thank you to Collin and Jessie who served and also cleaned up the kitchen.  They are the best!!!
