I meant to do this ages ago but I never got around to it. I hosted a small dinner party on New Year's Eve with John and Katie Andrew, their long-time friends Peter and Kathy Reynolds visiting from Rockville, Maryland, and Don and Nancy Campbell. All of us were participating in the football pool. As a surprise for Katie, I decorated the table in the colors of the University of Oregon, her alma mater. The team had made it to the Rose Bowl on New Year's day. I borrowed all those ducks from Norma and the Wittmayer's and put ribbons around their necks. Norma has a wonderful collection of decorator ducks. Ducks with yellow and green ribbons were everywhere. Katie and everyone else got quite a laugh. Too bad the Ducks let us down as we had ALL picked them to win the Rose Bowl.
That's a 2004 Russell Creek Syrah on the table. Boy, was it good. I roasted racks of lamb.
The obvious choice for a centerpiece was red roses.
We had a delightful time that evening and spent a lot of time talking about---what else?---college football.
